The rise of xenophobic nationalism and intolerance has many roots, but a failed economic model is among them. On both sides of the Atlantic, economic policy over the last three decades has been based on an unwarranted faith that society would benefit from the unregulated pursuit of profits and private gain. The result has been financial insecurity, stagnant or declining living standards, climate change and the erosion of community. Lacking a convincing account of how a failed economic model was at work, the response among many has been economic nationalism and hostility towards “outsiders.’’

Economists Wendy Carlin (Professor of Economics at University College London, lead on the CORE project, Expert Advisory Panelist for UK's Office for Budget Responsibility, awarded CBE) and Samuel Bowles (SFI Professor, Professor Emeritus at University of Massachusetts, former economic advisor to the governments of Cuba, South Africa and Greece, Presidential candidates Robert F. Kennedy and Jesse Jackson, the NM State Legislature, the Congress of South African Trade Unions, the Pontifical Academy of Science, and Nelson Mandela) discuss two emblematic cases of this process – Trump and Brexit — and outline a new economic paradigm as the basis for a more sustainable and just global future.
