Lannan presents Readings & Conversations, bringing inspired writers of fiction and poetry, as well as advocates of cultural freedom and liberation, to read from and discuss their work.
Ruth Wilson Gilmore is a scholar and activist who argues that the movement for abolition should be applied today to the abolition of prisons. She is director of the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics; a professor of geography at the City University of New York; and author of Golden Gulag: Prisons, Surplus, Crisis, and Opposition in Globalizing California. Rachel Kushner’s recent novel The Mars Room is the story of Romy Hall, serving two consecutive life sentences at Stanville Women’s Correctional Facility in California. Her fiction and essays appear regularly in the New York Times, the Paris Review, the Believer, and Bomb.
