Sebastian Barry is a novelist, poet, and playwright. His novel Days without End tells the story of Thomas McNulty, a 17-year-old fleeing the Great Famine in Ireland by enlisting in the U.S. Army in the 1850s. It was described by the New York Times as “a dreamlike Western with a different kind of hero.” His book The Secret Scripture was named Novel of the Year by the Irish Book Awards. Daniel Mendelsohn is an author, critic, and essayist and a columnist for Harper’s. He has written seven books, including the memoir The Elusive Embrace and Waiting for the Barbarians: Essays from the Classics to Pop Culture.
